The Governments of India and Rajasthan jointly established the Institute in 1963 as Malaviya Regional Engineering College Jaipur. The college was subsequently given the designation of National Institute of Technology on June 26, 2002. Under a Parliamentary Act, it was designated as the Institute of National Importance on August 15, 2007. The Ministry of Education (Shiksha Mantralaya), Government of India, provides all funding for the Institute.
